Enjoying Time With Your Loved One

Music and Memories

Music and Memories

Music can help lift your mood when you're sad. It can help you relax when you're coping with stress. The same is true for people with Alzheimer's disease.

Some caregivers feel that their loved ones are calmer after they listen to music together. Or, their loved ones seem more relaxed and pleasant while listening to music. Music may also lead to more interaction between people with Alzheimer’s and their caregivers.

Listening to music together may be something both you and your loved one enjoy. Try to choose songs your loved one may remember. Ask your loved one about favorite songs they enjoy. Or, play a mix of songs that were popular while they were young.

Here are some tips for enjoying music with your loved one:

  • Choose music that your loved one knows and enjoys.
  • Choose music that sets the mood you want.
  • Link music with other activities.
  • Get up and move. Clap, dance, and sing to add to the fun.
  • Reduce noise and other distractions to help your loved one focus.
