Enjoying Time With Your Loved One

Physical Activities

Physical Activities

If your doctor thinks it’s a good idea, adding light exercise to your loved one’s day may be a benefit to both of you. And light exercise may help your loved one sleep better.

Pick out things that you both like. If your loved one is able, try to:

  • Spend time outside
  • Take a short walk
  • Turn errands like grocery shopping or picking up children from school into chances for activity
  • Walk indoors at a local mall or shopping center on rainy or hot days
  • Spend time gardening

No matter what you choose, start slow. It may be healthy, and it allows you to enjoy quiet, simple moments with your loved one.

Walking for health and fun

Here are some tips for adding walking to your day:

  • If your loved one likes company, ask friends to walk with you.
  • Choose good shoes and socks.
  • Wear clothes that are right for the season. Keep warm with layers when appropriate. Stay cool with loose-fitting, comfortable clothes.
  • Drink a lot of water. Bring it with you if you can.
  • Try to start off slow.
  • Walk in a safe place that has adequate lighting.
  • Watch for signs of discomfort, pain, or fatigue.
