Dealing With Difficult Situations

Family Concerns

At times, family problems arise while caring for a loved one. Everyone is concerned and wants what's best for the person with Alzheimer's disease. But, different values and coping skills may make choices about care hard.

The important thing is to remind yourself that each of you wants what's best for your loved one. Here are some tips on working out family conflicts that arise:

  • Have regular family meetings. Talk about how you feel about caregiving roles, tasks, and problems. This can help ease stress. If your family cannot talk or make choices together, it may help to seek outside guidance.
  • Try to focus on strengths. One person may be good at hands-on care. Another may be good at keeping track of doctor's visits and other dates. Assign jobs where they are best suited.
  • Don't forget that your loved one may still be involved in health care choices as much as they can.
  • If you can, go to Alzheimer's support groups together. It may help to learn how other families cope with the challenge of Alzheimer's.
